Boston Training: On the Up-swing

So begins the upswing into marathon training for Boston. Last week I was really happy with how things were going and this week was even better as I was able to add biking back in as well as add some more running miles. I also ran outside twice which is a feat of it's own.

I am definitely happy with how this week went, first 50+ mile running week since before CIM. Very glad to also see 40+ biking miles, I really need to be better this year about building my bike base before triathlon training really ramps up. I'm finally feeling like I am out of base mode for running, and starting to get closer to where I want to be right now with biking and strength training. I do know that I need to get my butt to the pool soon, maybe one of these days.

But with 9 weeks to go until Boston, my running is my priority right now. I'm looking forward to pushing the next few weeks and starting to get outside my comfort zone more. I don't know what I want out of Boston yet, but I do know that I want to get there as prepared as I can.

I was good with my goals this past week, as far as morning workouts and biking go, but missed a strength training workout. I think I was most proud of my morning workouts, Wednesday AND Thursday I had my running miles in all before work. Not to mention both weekend days I was up and working out relatively early.

My training this week is going to be a little heavier in the earlier days of the week seeing as I have jam packed weekend ahead (10k race Saturday, and Half marathon Sunday). Hopefully take it easier Thursday/Friday giving me slightly fresher legs before back to back races. I've done b2b races before, I'm still not sure what my goals will be for this weekend though.

Goals for this week:
1. 3 Strength training workouts- I can tell this has been helping!
2. 2 Classes (any kind)- I need to be better about this!
3. 4 Bike sessions or 3 bike + 1 swim. -Tri base building!

How was your Valentines Day?

What was your last pair of new shoes?
I'm really loving my new Kinvara's I broke in on Friday (2nd picture). This is pair #10 of the Kinvara's, obsessed might be a good word.

  1. You're having trouble dragging yourself to the pool and I can't force myself to get on the bike. I just realized the my first triathlon is only 12 weeks away so I better get going. Glad to see you're training is going well despite the weather :)

    1. If only we were closer, would be so much easier if I had someone to do triathlon training with!

  2. My last shoes were my Mizuno Wave Elixirs. They have about 65 miles on them now, I really like them. Unfortunately they were discontinued, Mizuno is doing weird things with their shoes and I don't like that, I mean most runners want shoes to stay exactly the same, you know? Even if there are improvements, it's always risky to take a chance (at least in a runner's mind). You did a great job getting all those workouts in, especially with the snow up there!

    1. I've gotten lucky and I haven't found any issues with my updated shoes, but yes when they do change the model they aren't guaranteed to be the same. Some people are going to have issues, and some won't but thats the game we play with running shoes- none of us are the same!

  4. I agree that strength training helps with running significant. I love to see how consistent you are with your training. Mine is awful right now given that I've had the flu and this is my first day without a fever. I guess I should cut myself a break.

    1. Definitely cut yourself a break. You can't train when you are sick, it's just not a good idea. I have pushed that envelope before and it never ended well. I hope that you rest up and start feeling better soon!!! You'll be back at things in no time, just give your body time to get back to 100%!

  9. It's so great to see you have so many awesome weeks of training with this weather. I was just thinking yesterday, how brutal it must be training for a spring marathon this year, (I'm not going to lie, I am glad I'm not), but mad props to you.

  11. You rock! Soooo if I want to do a full marathon is this how much running I'll have to do in a week? That's a lot of running days in a row! Anyway, I'm noticing strength work is helping out a ton too! Way to go!!!

    1. You absolutely do not need to run like this for your first (or any) marathon! You will find the right groove that works for you while you start training! I am so excited for you!!

  12. I'd say you are right where you want to be nine weeks out. That is great--and getting outside after being stuck inside is even better! Keep up the good work--it will pay off come April.

  15. Yay! Glad marathon training is going well so far! I hope it continues to go that way! I am tempted to try race an april marathon as I feel like I am in good shape, but my gut tells me that I shouldn't....and I need to listen!

I lOVE LOVE LOVE my kinvaras for my training! They are awesome shoes, and even if I wasnt sponsored by Saucony, I would still buy them!

Keep up the good work :)

    1. Definitely listen to your gut when it comes to marathons!

Kinvara's are my absolute favorite. This is my 10th pair of them (no joke). I started wearing them a few years back and haven't tried anything since. Even if I don't make the hurricane team I will still continue to love and wear the brand religiously- stick with what works!

  21. Awesome work! Running outside 2x is amazing! I haven't gotten any runs outside in so long because of all the snow here in Boston. Today's long run will be outside because it's actually sunny and above freezing! Amazing. Keep it up!
