Wordless Wednesday: Running Beyond the Lyrics

Something I actually like about tapering (there aren't many things...besides more food), is playlist making. I pretty much have it down to a science, which totally shows my OCD but I really don't care.

I've got one of the widest range of music collections that you will ever see, hell there is even some Trans Siberian Orchestra Christmas tunes on there, right before Blue man group, some Skillet, some Demi Lovato, some Shinedown, Halestorm and even some Miley.... okay you get the picture.

Something I really love mixing in to my playlists is worldess/instrumental songs, basically songs with kick ass beats without the words to distract me. Don't get me wrong, I love running to songs I know all the words to- it distracts me from the miles and the soreness and the monotony of one step after another when things get hard. BUT there is something to be said about the trance I have been getting in while listening to sick beats.

Last night I had a good wordless jam session on the treadmill, and thought I would be nice and share some of the power beats I like to jam to with you.

Without further ado, here is a short list of songs that don't have words, that you NEED on your running playlist(some of them may have occasional words but not much). You can thank me later.

1. "Crystalize" by Lindsey Stirling
[I found this amazing violinist thanks to Pandora, I pretty much love running to her music, this song is one of my favorites though] Also by Lindsey-- "Elements", "Shadows", "Moon trance" and "Spontaneous me".

2. "Apologize" by Hollywood Undead
[There is a version of this with words, but I like it better without. The beat is sure to up your cadence regardless of how tired you may be]

3. "Christmas Eve/Sarajevo" by Trans Siberian Orchestra
[I know, I know...Christmas music? YES really. Just try it, I promise you won't be sorry]

4. "Rods & Cones" by Blue Man Group
[I became obsessed with the BMG soundtrack in 2004 after seeing them live in Vegas, I particularly love running to this one because it's got that happy upbeat tempo going]

5. "Braveheart Theme" (Techno Remix)
[It starts slow, maybe the first 45 seconds- but then the beat just really picks up]

6. "Perfect Outlaws" (From American Outlaws)
[John suggested this one, definitely good one for movie buffs, I mean it's definitely got that "home stretch" kind of feel]

7. "Tapestry" by Intervals
[I mean, you really can't run to this and not speed up. "Momento" is another good one by Intervals.]

Do you run with music?

Do you ever run with instrumental or only with lyrics?

What is YOUR must have song on your running playlist?
(So I can totally add it to my Wineglass playlist!)

  1. I love songs without lyrics! My favorite parts of songs is when there is a break between verses and it's only music. There's a Justin Timberlake song I really like with a good beat but I CANNOT think of it right now. Oof. My playlist is similar to yours because there is a little bit of EVERYTHING... Except country. There's a rap song called, "monster," but (again) I forget the artist. It's a GOOD ONE though!

  2. Don't take any music advice from me I listen to tons of different stuff. I do most of my runs with music unless I am running with someone else. There are a few must have Croatian songs I have on my playlist but also Ladies choice from Hairspray always ends up on there. Don't judge lol

  3. My swim coach used to play classical music during morning workouts and although it did take some getting used to, it was actually really enjoyable to not have words. Not exactly pump up music but it was so relaxing and you could let your mind just calm down and wander off. Perfect for 5 in the morning

    1. Definitely sounds like it would be good for the morning! I have some classical but I usually use that for relaxing, not the pump up music.

  4. I've just got back into running with music, I'm on again off again with the earbuds. I have one song that is almost wordless, "One of These Days" by Pink Floyd. The only lyric is hard to make out, but it is "One of these days I'm going to cut you into little pieces". That's not dark at all...
My kick-me-in-the-ass songs are Lose Yourself by Eminem, Rusty Cage by Johnny Cash and I Just Can't Get Enough by Depeche Mode...ya that's an embarrassingly eclectic selection of music, so I can't judge you and your Miley :)
What's really embarrassing is when I'm so far into my run that I don't even realize that I am air guitarist/air drumming/singing a little too loud...

    1. The amount of times I have gotten caught singing or dancing while running is pretty damn high....pretty much happens all the time.

  5. You have to add "It's Going Down" to your playlist so you can think of me during your race (you know I would love to be there). I am still toying with the idea of running the marathon with music actually. I do about half my training with music. Lately a little less since Tim and I have actually been running together.

  6. My all time favorite running music is dubstep remixes! Something about the beat just makes me want to keep going and going. I really like up beat tunes, while doing any workout!

  8. I never thought to listen to just instrumental while running. I know I love listening to classical music when I am working. It helps me focus.

  9. So weird: my co-worker just introduced me to Lindsey Stirling two days ago and I've been weirdly obsessed with her since! I'll have to check out some of these other songs too.

  10. These all do have great beats.
My favorite part about tapering is my run time turns into nap time.

  11. Interesting...I never thought to look for "wordless" songs for my running playlists - thanks for the idea!

  12. Nice.
Although does it mess up your tempo? I found with my last sprint tri the first two miles were pretty nice and then all of a sudden - the last song shaved a minute off that time.
Hubby (the runner) listens to books on tape. Now THAT'S weird.
